Finally.

It’s not cancer, thank God. But the mole is weird enough (it’s more like an adult’s abnormal mole than a child’s) that the doctor wants to have the area around it excised, and skin checks every six months. I just KNEW there was something wrong with it. I’ve had a sick feeling in my stomach since I first noticed it. But all’s well, that (hopefully) ends well.

And I’m making an appointment for myself TODAY, since Abby and I have the same color skin, and I’ve got all kinds of… well, let’s call them marks of character.

I’m still all jitters. But what a relief not to have to wait all weekend. I don’t think I could stand it.

Thank you all so much for all your well wishes. I can’t tell you how comforting it’s been. Like a warm emotional blanket — and I’ve needed one.

Lots of hugs all around from a very relieved Karen

YAY YAY YAY!!! That’s fabulous news!

  2. Karen- Halleluja!!! I’m so relieved for you and Abby and your family. We’re in Houston, Grace and I and 18 cousins and aunts are going to see ‘Wicked’ tomorrow and I couldn’t relax until I checked on my new friend. Now I’m gonna exhale and go join the tween-age girls in the pool; I just made rice krispie treats and then later I’m painting their nails. I recommend a gin and tonic and some chocolate for you!! Melissa

  3. Thanks so much, Laura and Melissa… knowing you guys were thinking good thoughts was a huge help.

Lots of hugs to both of you — and Melissa, have a great time with the girls. 🙂

I hadn’t read your blog in about 4 days — and the first thing I saw today was “It wasn’t cancer.” And of course I was shocked –and sorry that you had to go thru all this –but glad to hear that all is well. I once wrote a story (an essay) about how much we worry about our children. At the time my child had driven off to college & was supposed to call when she arrived– and I hadn’t heard from her and couldn’t find her and was out of my mind with the fear that her car had gone over a cliff and no one would ever know. Once I learned that all was well, I swore I never wanted to be a grandmother because it would all just start over again. And guess what… Now I have three baby grandsons to adore (and to worry myself sick over…) Someone suggested you should have a gin and tonic… I would suggest two of them. “Gin and tonic and chocolate,” she said. Hmmm That doesn’t sound bad either.

  6. I’m so glad you got an answer finally! Good for you listening to your intuition. Mine always amazes me.

I too have had the “benign-but-too-weird-not-to-remove” condition (not a mole but a cyst), so I do understand where you’re coming from. Hope Abby’s checks are clear from here on out! Take care, hon.

  7. Judy,

I spent more money than I care to admit at Sam’s yesterday, and my purchase included several bottles of wine and a big jug of Irish Cream.

    And yes, chocolate.

    I’m on it. 🙂

And you’re right: parenting — and grandparenting — are for the stout of heart.

I’d love to see your essay, by the way!

  8. Thea,

Thanks. 🙂 Big hugs back to the most talented web designer in the world… let me know when you’ll be in Austin!

  9. Christa,

We’ll just both have to be careful. And my husband still thinks it was ‘no big deal.’

    Isn’t it funny?

Ah, kids. And someone reminded me the other day that in a few years, they’ll be driving!

(Heading for the Irish Cream now…)
