The chair problem

So even though I declared this week a writing sabbatical, my coffee house reopened today, and I had to go check it out.

And I am still reeling from what I found.

In the place of my four brown cushy chairs — in which I have comfortably written several books — are three extremely straight-backed, red-velour monstrosities (the tops of the arms are wood — wood!) and… a chaise longue.

Yes, that’s right. A chaise longue.

Which means that unless I am willing to bring a lumbar support cushion (and perhaps a pair of sunglasses — that fabric is bright), I am going to have to find another coffeehouse.

Maybe this is God’s way of telling me it’s time to shake things up a bit.

What do you think the odds are that I could convince the owner of Cafe Uno (the place I was raving about yesterday) to put in a few big comfy chairs?

*sigh*

  1. Too many authors not paying the rent?? Head ’em up and move ’em out…. with ghastly chairs they don’t want to stay around for long, which just makes room for more paying customers. Could be.

    Happy writing –

  2. I actually got out of the house today! Spent about three hours at Seattle’s Best just editing, editing, editing. Loitering nonwriters had already filled all of the comfy chairs, but that fact might have actually helped keep me on the ball. No comfy sleepy time for me!

Either that or a misguided attempt at being chic… or both! I say “chaise longue” goes with “coffee shop” about as well as “barber chair,” or, for that matter, “basketball goal.” I would definitely try talking to the owner of Cafe Uno. I imagine he’d be much more likely to want his customers to linger. The Hasting’s I go to when I’m in Kerrville has several comfy chairs and free Wi-Fi in their cafe. Or at least it had better still have those things, since I’m going there next weekend. If I see a chaise longue I’m going to laugh… maybe.

P.S. If you’re ever in Nacogdoches (which isn’t very likely, but that’s beside the point) go to Java Jack’s. The owner does his own roasting!

Change is good. Well, only if you agree with it. LOL. Maybe it is the universe’s way of telling you to change it up a bit.

Heck, relax on the chaise lounge sip your coffee & write. You could be their main attraction – Writer At Work. LOL.

This weekend was busy, it finally stopped raining in Connecticut. So I spent a big part of the weekend cleaning off the patio and yesterday was my quilting class.I baked chocolate chip cookies to bring with me – they all loved them. I spent the entire time cutting the squares needed and I began sewing a few blocks together. I’m making a Shining Star Wall hanging in patriotic fabric. I have homework and another class next Sunday.

I hope you find a comfy spot to write in.

  5. Dani,

I do wonder if that might not be the case… although one of my barista friends sent me an e-mail asking me not to relocate, which was kind. He’d like to start a petition to get different chairs (he writes there, too).

    We’ll see!

    Happy writing to you, too!

  6. Nicholas,

I do like the SBCs; there’s one in Tarrytown with free internet and cushy leather chairs. Of course, I just anted up for a year of Internet access at the coffee shop I’m used to going to… grrr…

Glad things are moving along! And if you get tired of editing your stuff and want to do mine, let me know… 😉

  7. John,

As you well know, “chic” is decidedly not “moi.”

Have fun in Kerrville (if you haven’t already gone)… and if I’m ever in Nacogdoches, I’ll definitely look JJ’s up. Although I agree with you, it’s rather unlikely.

And let me know if you find another chaise longue!

  8. Debra,

I didn’t try the chaise longue, because it was occupied, but if it’s got lumbar support, I might try it.

And you’re one of those people who sew, aren’t you?

Glad the rain stopped, and if I ever get around to looking, I’ll let you know. How’s the writing?

  9. For one and all, if you’re ever in Colorado Springs, Colorado go to Agia Sophia Coffee Shop on West Colorado…. comfy, free wi-fi, and an orthodox bookstore that stocks the classics, too. And no mind-jamming music. Very conducive to writing. Oh, and coffee, good soups, fresh bread.
