Trick or Treat? Definitely a
Beets?
I just got back from my revise-a-thon (which is still in progress); I’ve made it through the first third of the manuscript and have added about 2,000 words that I’m very, very happy with. And I even got to include Leslie, Austin’s transvestite mascot. (He favors thongs, falsies, and a full beard. He can pull it off, though — he’s got terrific legs. I can’t wait to see what he’s wearing for Valentine’s Day!)
Anyway, last night after my bath and cold compresses (see possum incident, below), I opened up Jitterbug Perfume (what a title!), a Tom Robbins tome that I bought yesterday and haven’t read in about ten years. (It beat out the haunted castles, the dark fire something or other book, and the stack of travel essays.) And although the dialogue is not quite as sparkling as it seemed in my younger days, the opening is just as remarkable as I remember. Here it is:
TODAY’S SPECIAL
“The beet is the most intense of vegetables. The radish, admittedly, is more feverish, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of discontent not of passion. Tomatoes are lusty enough, yet there runs through tomatoes an undercurrent of frivolity. Beets are deadly serious.”
Ha!
Honestly, though. I’ve never thought of a tomato as frivolous before. Or a beet as serious, come to think of it. So thank you, Tom Robbins, for writing such weird and vegetable-y prose.
I am off now to return e-mails and pay my electric bill. And to exercise.
Ta for now, then… I hope your day is as zesty and interesting as Tom Robbins’ crisper drawer!
Tom Robbins aside, you did get a new camera and figured out how to use it. I love the new photo!! Melissa B.
Melissa,
Yes, I did get a new camera — even though for now I have to download the photos to my kids’ computer. It even has a self-portrait feature! (I did one for my Amazon plog, for fun.)
I just got tired of looking at a photo of me that didn’t look like me. I think this one’s closer, since it was taken in my living room three hours ago.
I’m so glad you like it! It’s a relief to have something that looks more like what I see in the mirror — even though it’s just a snapshot. (Abby still says it doesn’t look like me, incidentally. Then again, to her, every picture — except for the ones where I have giant bags under my eyes and haven’t brushed my hair in three days — “doesn’t look like me”. I don’t know what to make of that, really.)
Anyway, off to take a bath now… but thanks so much for noticing!
Hi Karen,
Turns out today is more like a sleet day than snow. We barely got a dusting over night and since the wee hours of the morning it’s been sleeting with nor’easter winds.
The dogs decided to go back to bed (our bed) and my dh is also home due to the weather. So far I’ve read through 7 chapters since Monday and today my plan is for 4-5 more.
The new pix is great.
BTW, I live minutes from Bethel. Whatta small world.
I hope you’re enjoying better weather.
